YAKIMA - Otto Sayler, age 97, longtime Yakima Valley resident, died at Yakima Memorial Hospital, Friday, May 6, 2005, following a stroke two days earlier.
He was born April 14th, 1908, in the town of Venturia, ND, to the late Andrew and Christina Sayler. Otto attended school in Venturia, was a member of the city band and played on the city baseball team. It was there he met his wife, Ida Dockter, whom he married on June 23, 1931.
Otto spent his early adult life working for the Standard Oil Co. as a bulk agent, delivering gas and oil to the farmers and businessmen of the country. He was responsible for delivering his products in the harsh Dakota winters over gravel and dirt roads, often times clearing pathways through the deep snow with his gas truck for others to follow. Moving frequently, he built up businesses throughout North Dakota by establishing bulk stations in different towns. In addition, Otto loved playing baseball and played whenever he could find a city team to play on. After sixteen years he decided to leave Standard Oil and settled in Linton, ND, where he lived for many years operating a business buying and selling dairy and poultry products. After one more move to Jamestown, ND, Otto moved to Washington in 1960 where he bought an orchard near Wapato. Here he was a longtime member of Hope Lutheran Church where he served in many capacities. He ran the orchard until his retirement and then moved to Union Gap. Here he explored his talent as an artist, painting pictures as well as painting signage for the Central Washington Fairgrounds.
After the passing of his wife, Otto eventually moved to Selah, WA to live with his son and daughter-in-law, Lyle and Nanci Sayler. He spent his final years at Riverview Manor in Selah where he entertained many a friend and stranger alike with his harmonica.
Otto was preceded in death by is loving wife of fifty six years, Ida. Otto and Ida are survived by their four children, Frances Tracy, Yakima, WA; Marlys Sayler-Danielson, Oscola, WI; Lyle and wife Nanci, Selah, WA; Monty and wife Rachael, Kirkland, WA; eleven grandchildren, Vicki, Norma and Hollie Tracy; Steven, Beth and Amy Danielson; David, Cindy, Jay, Jocilyn and Collin Sayler and eleven great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Friday, May 27, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1207 S. 7th Avenue, Yakima.
The Sayler family wishes to acknowledge and thank all friends, relatives and caregivers who offered Otto companionship, comfort, and kindness in the latter years of his life. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Memorial Hospice, or a charity of your choice in care of Keith and Keith Funeral Home, 902 West Yakima Avenue, Yakima, WA 98902.
