Lydia Heer, 102, Eureka, SD died Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at the Avera Eureka Healthcare Center.
Lydia Sayler, daughter of Christina (Stoebner) and Andreas Sayler, was born July 25, 1904 at Venturia, ND. She was baptized in her infancy by Pastor Heinrich Reinhart and confirmed in her Christian faith on June 8, 1919 at the Lutheran Church in Venturia by Pastor C.H.W. Schultz. Lydia was educated through the 8th grade and then taught rural school for a couple of years.
She was united in Holy Matrimony to Willie (Bill) Heer on September 22, 1924. To this union 2 sons were born and one stepdaughter was raised as her own. They lived on a farm eight miles SE of Eureka until 1945 when they moved to Hosmer. They returned to Eureka in 1972. Mr. Heer died September 28, 1983. Lydia continued living in Eureka and since October 1999 had resided at the Avera Eureka Healthcare Center. Lydia was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Hosmer and Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka. She enjoyed gardening and did a fine job of keeping in touch with people through her letter writing. She enjoyed being a homemaker and her children cherish their memories of a loving mother who cared for her family any way she could.
She is survived by two sons-Quentin (Lavina) Heer of San Luis Obispo, CA and Larry (Evelea) Heer of Eureka; 1 brother- Arthur Sayler of Ashley, ND; 1 sister Ella (Fred) Wahl of Jamestown, ND; 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 4 great, great grandchildren, and 5 step great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father on April 4, 1955 her mother on July 29, 1923, her husband, her stepdaughter (Viola Metzger), five brothers (Carl, Edward, Otto, Emil, and Walter), three sisters (two in infancy and Olga Grozhans), and one granddaughter--Judy (Metzger) Wassenberger.
Her funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, January 6, 2007 at Zion Lutheran Church, Eureka, with Pastor Dianne Rood-Kiesz officiating. Burial will follow at the Church Cemetery.
Lydia's favorite Bible verse was "God is our refuge and our strength." Psalm 46, Verse 1. Her love is the legacy that lives on in her family.
Casketbearers will be Ken Metzger and Jocelyn Seller of Arvada, CO., Lynette Carter of Pierre, SD, Arliss Metzger of Aberdeen, Andrea Espinoza of Bakersfield, CA., and Rick Heer of Santa Barbara, CA.
Lien Funeral Home, Bowdle, is in charge of arrangements.
