Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2008, at a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette, for Luke Damien Fabacher, SSG LAARNG, age 35, who passed away on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Reverend Monsignor Keith J. DeRouen, Rector of Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette, will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Karen Broussard, soloist, accompanied by Tom Niel, organist, will sing, "Amazing Grace", "On Eagles' Wings", "Just A Closer Walk With Thee", "The Lord's Prayer" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic" for the services. Survivors include his wife, Kristen Sturlese Fabacher of Lafayette; one daughter, Abigail Emma Fabacher of Lafayette and one son, Tyler James Hamilton of Seattle, WA; his father, Clarence Fabacher of Lafayette; one brother, Heath Fabacher and his wife, Tanya of Lafayette; grandmother, Lucille Billeaud Mehal; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ferdie and Kathryn Dupuis of Houston, TX; brothers-in-law, Trey and Will Dupuis both of Houston, TX; and one sister-in-law, Lindsey Dupuis of Los Angeles, CA. He was preceded in death by his mother, Emma Julia Fabacher; his maternal grandfather, Joseph Mehal; and his paternal grandparents, Clarence & Theresa Fabacher. After graduating from Northside High School in 1991, Luke joined the United States Navy and served honorably until his discharge in 1995. In May 2000, Luke re-entered the military, joining the Louisiana Army National Guard's 256th Infantry Brigade and Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion 156th Infantry (Mechanized). Luke served in Alpha Company until the Unit was federally mobilized in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom on May 16, 2004. Luke was amongst the many proud men and women to serve in Iraq with the 256th Infantry Brigade and returned home in September 2005. Shortly thereafter, Luke entered the Louisiana Army National Guard in a full-time (active duty) status as a Recruiting Sergeant, where he served the Morgan City and Lafayette areas until his passing. SSG Fabacher received numerous awards, decorations and promotions, amongst the many are namely his Combat Infantryman Badge, Meritorious Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Basic Recruiters Badge, Louisiana War Cross and many other extremely deserving awards.SSG Fabacher will be certainly missed by his many friends in the Louisiana Recruiting and Retention Command, Alpha Company 2nd Battalion and the entire 256th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and Louisiana Army National Guard. Luke was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He and his family were huge Ragin Cajun Fans, particularly UL Baseball. Pallbearers will be members of the Louisiana National Guard Honors Team. Honorary Pallbearers will be Derek Mehal, Garett Mehal, Sergeant Nathan Mehal, Richy Fielding, Randy Fielding, Ryan Mehal, Mike Fabacher, Marshal Fabacher, Keith Fabacher, Matt Mehal, Bounty Fontenot, Bob Magos, Pat McDonald, David Sturlese, Cy Mehal, Sergeant First Class Nathaniel Faulk, Staff Sergeant Joshua Sweat, Staff Sergeant Kennery Foster. A Rosary will be prayed Friday, May 23, 2008 at 7:00 PM in Martin & Castille Funeral Home. The family requests that visitation be observed on Friday from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM and on Saturday from 8:00 AM until time of service.
