- [S927] Obituary.
Esther Emmalee Sulsberger Hossman, 84, of Newport, Ohio, formerly of New Matamoras, Ohio, died in her home on June 21, 2008.
She was born June 23, 1923, in Woodsfield, Ohio to Frederick Otto and Veronica Henrietta Weigel Sulsberger. She was baptized and raised in St. Paul???s Evangelical and Reformed Church, Woodsfield, where she sang in the junior and senior choirs for many years.
Esther graduated from Woodsfield High School, class of 1942. After graduation, which was during World War II, she accepted an appointment with the War Department in Washington, D.C., working under the Adjutant General J.A. Ulio. She, along with three other Grade 2 typists and the normal staff of four, accomplished a difficult task in 42 days that would have, in peace time, taken a year to perform. They received a commendation (no salary) for their work. They were nicknamed ???The Can Do Section??? of the War Department by General Ulio and he said, ???This overall spirit would prevail to win the war.???
When the war ended, she married Elwood Charles Hossman on July 6, 1945. They have celebrated 62 years together. They lived three years in Logan, Ohio, where she worked as a proof-reader for the Logan Daily News. On December 24, 1949, she and her husband moved to New Matamoras, Ohio, where he purchased the Hill Insurance Agency. She worked part-time for 32 years in the agency.
Esther and her husband have been members of the New Matamoras United Methodist Church for 52 years. She organized the young women of the church into Circle 3, having a membership of 32. This circle later became the ???Esther Circle??? when all of the circles took women of the Bible names and became ???The United Methodist Women.???
Esther was a Cub Scout den mother, a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 261 in New Matamoras for 58 years, PT Boats Inc., Lady Aladdin Shriners, Auxiliary of Disabled American Veterans, Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post No. 6387, American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 64 and a charter member of the United Methodist Women.
Esther loved having all of her family around her, gardening and growing flowers, reading, listening to music, playing cards, watching Nextel racing and Ohio State football games, sewing, knitting, cross-stitching quilts and traveling.
Esther is survived by her husband of 62 years; two children, Gregory Hossman (Joy) of Marietta and Elaine Jo Haught (Rudy) of Sistersville, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Jason Scott Williamson (Tina) of Gahanna, Ohio, Jessica Marie Thompson (Bob) of Sardis, Ohio, and Adam Kristofor Hossman of Marietta; three great-grandchildren, Dacia Marie, Riley and Conner Thompson of Sardis, Ohio; three step granddaughters, Megan See of Gahanna, Ohio, Shauna Hearing (Jon) and Astin Oliver of Cambridge, Ohio; three step great-grandchildren, Madelyn Oliver, Mya Oliver and Bryce Hearing, all of Cambridge, Ohio; two sisters, Mary Swonger of Canton and Mamie Briggs of Woodsfield, Ohio; one brother-in-law, George Kramer of Kentucky; two sisters-in-law, Myra McGuire of Mason, Ohio, and Shirley Ludwig of Woodsfield, Ohio; one dear aunt by marriage, Gladys Reich of Lewisville, Ohio; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
