Mary Ellen Rice was a delight to everyone she met ? her smile, her encouragement, her enthusiasm and her love of people made her a joy to know. Originally from Wheeling, West Virginia, born Mary Ellen Neuhardt, she grew up with two brothers and a sister. While attending the University of Cincinnati she met her life partner, Alexander Gibbs Rice, Jr., and they married on October 5, 1940, just before he was sent to the Pacific Theater with the Navy during World War II.
Mary Ellen and Alex helped found Highlawn Presbyterian Church in St. Albans, West Virginia where they lived for thirty years while raising their family. Mary Ellen taught Kindergarten at the church for over twenty-one years and was active in every facet of church life. Her other passion, Girl Scouting, filled her time as a troop leader and board member for the local Girl Scout Council.
In 1980 she and Alex retired to Weslaco, Texas where she became involved in many organizations including the Weslaco Museum, Fine Arts Club, Girl Scouts and the First Presbyterian Church of Weslaco. A circle that she founded for working women was renamed the Mary Ellen Rice Circle in her honor. She loved history and culture and had an extensive postcard collection, often giving about her cards.
She is survived by her children, son James Kirk Rice and his wife Eileen of Cincinnati, Ohio, and daughter, Sally Gibbs Lawrence and her husband Bruce of San Clemente, California; four grandchildren, Jason Rice and his wife Vicki, Whitney Wistken and her husband Neil, Brett Lawrence and his wife Annika and Kari Wheatley and her husband Chad; and four great-grandchildren, Alexander A. Rice, Lily A. Wistken, Brooks Lawrence and Wiley Lawrence.
In her 94 years she touched many lives and truly made the world a better place. She was loved and memories of her will always make those who knew her smile.
A celebration of her life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Weslaco on Friday, December 3, 2010 at 2:00 pm followed by a reception in Fellowship Hall. Her ashes will be interred at Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans, West Virginia.
Arrangements were under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.
