FELL TO DEATH FROM A TALL TREE
Fatal Accident to the Young Son of John B. Wegman.
WITH A PARTY OF BOYS
Was Out for an Afternoon of Pleasure in Hunting Nuts -- Lost His Balance in a Tree -- Died at the Hannemann Hospital
Arthur, the 12-year-old son of John B. Wegman, of No. 89 Oxford street, was killed yesterday afternoon by falling from a tall tree on Cobb's hill, while on a nutting expedition with a number of boy companions.
Some half dozen boys of about the same age were in the party beating the woods about the hills for nuts. They gained much enjoyment in climbing the trees and shaking the nuts to the ground, taking turns in the climbing. Arthur was near the top of a large beech tree shaking a limb when he lost his insecure footing and fell to the ground. In his fall he struck the out-spreading limbs, one of which is supposed to have broken his arm and another to have caused him to turn in such a manner that he struck the ground head first. He was unconscious when his frightened companions reached his side. He is supposed to have fallen about forty feet.
One of the lads hastened for help, and the Hahnemann Hospital ambulance was secured and the injured boy was removed to that institution. He was found to be suffering from concussion of the brain due to a fracture of the skull. Little could be done to relieve him and death resulted at 8 o'clock last evening without his having regained consciousness.
Arthur is described as a peculiarly bright and lovable child who will be missed by a large circle of playmates. He leaves beside his parents a sister, aged 7 years.
