- [S927] Obituary.
Mabel Koah, age 98, of Brighton Township, passed peacefully on Monday, March 28, 2016, while in the respite unit of the Good Samaritan Hospice. Mabel will forever be known as the "lady with the flower in her hair."
Born in New Brighton, PA, on November 5, 1917, she was the second oldest, yet last surviving child of Harry and Georgia Young Veiock. She married Clarence T. Koah in 1940, and resided in New Brighton with their three children until 1954 when they moved to Conway, PA into the "house with the fireman's pole". After her husband's retirement, they moved to Pensacola, FL, where they remained until 2004. In September of that year, Hurricane Ivan started a chain of events that resulted in their moving back to PA, into the Frances Farmer Senior Center. Mabel loved living there with friends and activities. In 2007, her husband passed and in 2013, her health required her to make her residence with her daughter, where she remained until her death.
In her early adult years, Mabel worked as a Bell Telephone switchboard operator and supervisor. She then became a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Mabel was always involved in her children's activities, from being the D.J. at junior high dances, through PTA offices, to sewing uniforms for the high school band. After her last child left home, she took knitting and oil paint classes and became quite accomplished. She always sewed, so when her first granddaughter was born, she began making Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, followed by Barbie doll clothes, and then many other things. Her talents were displayed and sold at multiple craft shows. Grandchildren remember fun and good food, including special red velvet cakes, at Grandma's house, and all of the family remembers camping outings in Grandma and Grandpap's trailer.
Mabel was Protestant in faith and a former member of the Baden United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and eight siblings. They were Virginia Price, Margaret Faller, Dorothy Mason, Anna Goodall, and four brothers, Glenn, John, Chuck, and Phillip Veiock.
Surviving are a daughter and two sons, Carole Gebhard, Brighton Township; Gary Koah, Purvis, MS; David Koah and his wife, Jean, State College, PA; six grandchildren, Michelle (Mark) Chemini, Beaver Falls; Brian (Kyra) Gebhard, Washington, DC; Gary Koah, Pittsburgh, PA; Dennis (Wendy) Koah, Pittsburgh, PA; Dan Koah, Atlanta, GA, and Tim (Caitlan) Koah, Paoli, PA; six (plus one to be born in July) great grandchildren, Alina and Collin Chemini, Karsen Koah, Ryan Koah, and Anabel and Owen Gebhard, and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are a son-in-law, Michael Gebhard, Chippewa Township, and a dear friend, Elinor Wilson, Brighton Township.
The family wishes to thank Mabel's loving, compassionate caregivers, Becky, Karen, Norma, and Margaret, who have assisted in her care at home during the past year, and the caring staff of Good Samaritan Hospice.
Mabel was a vibrant and caring woman and was loved and will be sadly missed by all who knew her. There will be no visitation or service and private burial will be on a future date in Grove Cemetery, New Brighton, PA. The family wishes everyone to remember Mabel the way they knew her.
