Elizabeth was the first American-born child of Friedrich and Elizabeth Kochert and the only child born during the several years the family lived in Cincinnati. Elizabeth's father, Friedrich Kochert, was born November 3, 1825, in Rumbach, Palatinate (Pfalz), Germany. Her mother, Elizabeth Nieb, was born September 18, 1823, in Wilgartswiesen, Palatinate. The Kocherts came to the United States with children Katherine (Parks), born November 19, 1846; and Jacob, born August 24, 1850. The family arrived at New York City and settled at Buffalo.
Elizabeth was a year and one-half old when the family moved from Cincinnati to Monroe County, Ohio. Elizabeth's siblings born in Monroe County were: Mary (Scharer), born July 10, 1857; Louisa, born January 25, 1860; John, born August 4, 1863; and Matilda (Clift), born November 7, 1865.
Friedrich Kochert worked as a blacksmith and also farmed in Monroe County.
Obituary
Mrs. Elizabeth Steinhoff
Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Steinhoff of Rodney were held on Saturday afternoon at the German City church, Rev. W. W. Kramme officiating. Appropriate musical numbers were sung by a mixed quartet, Mrs. Bonnie Cheely, Mrs. J. L. Peters, John H. Bale, and Everett Persinger, accompanied by Mrs. Ed Helming. Interment was in the German City cemetery. Willman funeral home of Rodney had charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Steinhoff died of a five weeks illness at her home at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at the age of 86 years, 8 months, and 3 days.
Mrs. Elizabeth Steinhoff, nee Kochart, was born November 13, 1854 in Cincinnati, Ohio. In early infancy she was received into the fellowship of the Christian faith through the rite of Holy Baptism. On April 23, 1876 she was married to Charles Steinhoff. To this union were born six children, one child dying in infancy. Mr. Steinhoff died on August 23, 1925.
The Steinhoffs moved into this community in 1881 and resided here with the exception of 14 years, when they lived in Ashland, Ohio. They were among the early members of the German City church, having taken an active part in the work of this congregation.
Surviving Mrs. Steinhoff are five children, Mrs. Will Kilzer of Hubbard, Nebr., Miss Minnie Steinhoff of Rodney, Mrs. D. F. Hummel of Smithland, Mrs. A. O. Morton of Akron, Ohio, and Theodore Steinhoff of Portland, Ore; two sisters, Mrs. Matilda Clift of Sioux City and Mrs. J. Scharer of Canton, Ohio; 9 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends.
