Isodeen Veiock Serene, 202 Greenview Court, Indiana, died March 15, 2003 at her daughter's home in Miami, Florida. She was born August 18, 1917, in New Brighton, the daughter of Theodore Ira and Nancy Jane (Calvin) Veiock. A graduate of New Brighton High School and Grove City College, she taught high school in Rochester and Saltsburg until her marriage in 1943 to the late Joseph W. Serene, and Indiana attorney, who was then a lieutenant in the United States Army. Mrs. Serene resided in Indiana for the rest of her life, where she raised her family and was active in the civic and social affairs of the community. She was a member of the Indiana County Child Welfare Advisory Board, served as president of the Indiana Garden Club, and the Junior Women's Civic Club. A passionate collector of antiques and student of genealogy, she founded the Shaver Springs Chapter of Questers in 1974, and was a member of the Indiana County Historical Society. She was also an avid and accomplished bridge player. Long active in the cultural affairs of Indiana University of Pennsylvania where her husband served as President of the Board of Trustees, Mrs. Serene was a member of the President's Council of the Foundation for IUP's John Sutton Hall. She was a member of the Indiana Country Club and Greystone United Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Serene is survived by two sons: Joseph W. Serene, III of Bethesda, MD; David C. Serene, Indiana; a daughter, Jane Serene Raskin, Miami, FL; four grandsons: Peter Serene, Stephen Serene, David Raskin; Mark Raskin; one brother, Theodore I Veiock, Des Moines, IA; one sister-in-law, Margaret T. Serene, Indiana. Indiana addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Kenneth C. Veiock and her sister, Beulah V. Cook. Details of a memorial service will follow. Memorial donations may be made to the Joseph and Isodeen Serene Memorial Scholarship Fund administered through the Foundation for IUP.
