Birth: Mar. 26, 1917
Texarkana
Bowie County
Texas, USA
Death: Nov. 11, 2012
Jim Berry, 95, left this world to join his Lord and Maker on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012. Funeral: Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Cathedral, 1206 Throckmorton. Interment: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation and rosary: 7 p.m. Wednesday at Thompson's Harveson & Cole Funeral Home. Memorials: His family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Diabetes Association , the Alzheimer's Association or a charity of choice . Jim was born to Prentice Grady Berry and W. Helen Shumaker Berry on March 26, 1917, in Texarkana. His formative years were spent during the Great Depression on his family's farm in Van Wert, Ohio, during which he developed the characteristics that marked his adult life: respect, loyalty, ingenuity, self-reliance, charity, generosity and empathy. A member of America's Greatest Generation, his studies at Texas A&M University were interrupted by World War II, where he served as a highly decorated pilot for the 31st Bomb Squadron, 13th Air Force, in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Pacific theater. It is only fitting that Mr. Berry passed away on Veterans Day. Upon return to the United States after the war, he continued to serve his country in a long career as a civil engineer in the General Services Administration. His service was marked with integrity and superior results, earning him the respect of his peers, superiors and subordinates. He dedicated his life to his family and community after his retirement, and all who had the great fortune to meet him will sorely miss his absence from this world. In the words of St. Paul, Mr. Berry kept the faith, fought the good fight and finished the course. His family is grieving his death but is overjoyed that he has achieved his eternal reward. The family expresses its appreciation to Texas Cardiac Care and Vitas Hospice for the tender care provided to Mr. Berry. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bill Berry; sister, Gradyne Berry Chadwick; and son, Mark Joseph Berry. Survivors: Mr. Berry, a loving and devoted husband and father, is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jacqueline; seven of his eight children, Jacqueline, Nancy, Paulette, Helen, James, Josette and George; 16 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
