Floyd Elvin Heft went home to be with the Lord June 21, 2011. He was born Oct. 6, 1921 in Lewisville, a son of the late John and Leona Hofmeister Heft.
He was one of six children, three boys and three girls. He graduated from Lewisville High School in 1939 and The Ohio State University in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. He was a member of Delta Theta Sigma Fraternity. He entered WWII, was a B-29 Pilot U.S. Air Force and rose to officer level of a Lt. Colonel. Being an active reservist following the war, he was selected to attend the National War College, Washington D.C., International Joint Commis-sion, United States and Canada in 1975. Floyd's professional career was a distinguished soil and water conservationist, both in Ohio and nationally.
His innovative legislative accomplishments gave national recognition to Ohio's Soil and Water Conservation Districts. He initiated precedent setting legislation, including state and county authorization to appropriate funds to Ohio Conservation Districts (zero dollars in 1951 to 9.5 million in 1992) which revised drainage laws, mandating design and maintenance improvements. This expanded the conservation districts' capabilities and produced nationally recognized comprehensive agriculture pollution abatement laws for Ohio.
Some of his highest awards included: President of The Soil Conservation Society of America, National Hall of Fame and Ohio Conservation Hall of Fame - 1986; Ohio Agriculture Hall of Fame - 1993. The Senate of the Ohio Legislature quoted at his retirement "Because of your leadership Ohio State has one of the finest conservation programs in America". Floyd Heft also pioneered "No-Till" on his farms in Knox County starting in 1970, which created environmental and economical advantages in Ohio and nationally. He was an Associate Professor at The Ohio State University. Lifetime residents of Columbus, Floyd and his wife Elaine were members of Overbrook Presbyterian Church in Clintonville, avid golfers and members of OSU Golf Course. At retirement they had a home in St. Petersburg, Fla., where they were members at Isla Del Sol Yacht and Golf Club. He will always be loved and missed by family and friends and remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Surviving are his wife, Elaine A Heft; son, John (Jan) Griffith Heft; grandson, John Griffith "Griff" Heft, II; sister, Wilda Bartenschlag; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held June 28 at Union Cemetery, Mausoleum B., 3349 Olentangy River Road.
