Madeline Veiock Phillips

NEW BRIGHTON - Madeline Veiock Phillips, 87, of New Brighton, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 4, 2005, at Country Meadows Retirement Community in Bridgeville, Pa. Born Feb. 16, 1918 in New Brighton, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Gertrude (Barnes) Veiock.She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. Robert C. Phillips, on Sept. 23, 2004; an infant son, Robert Charles Jr. "Robbie", in 1946; a brother, Lester Veiock, in 1978, and three sisters, Ruth Correll, in 1988; Evelyn Stoner, in 1996, and Flora Buck, in 2004.Madeline graduated from New Brighton High School in 1936 and earned her R.N. degree in 1940 from the Beaver Valley General Hospital School of Nursing. In 1938, she was honored as "Miss New Brighton" during the Centennial. In 1941, Madeline married Robert C. Phillips and they lived happily together in New Brighton for the rest of their lives (63 years of marriage). A lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of New Brighton, she was active in the Women's Society for many years, (including serving as president from 1960-1962), sang in the church choir, helped begin the Memorial Gift Fund (chairperson for a number of years), and played an active role in the funding and building of the church school and its remodeling. Madeline was also active in the Lioness Club, in the Auxiliary to the American Optometric Association, Order of the Eastern Star, in her class reunion organizing committee, in Meals on Wheels, and in her local duplicate bridge group. Most of all, Madeline found great joy in her flowers and gardening.Madeline is survived by two daughters and a son, Dr. Sally J. Phillips, Professor Emerita from the University of Maryland; Patricia Phillips Holmes and her husband, Phillip, Pittsburgh, and Dr. Richard Phillips and his wife, Clara, New Brighton; four grandsons, Lt. Commander Russell Holmes and his wife, Amy, Pittsburgh; Brian Holmes and his wife, Amy, Pittsburgh; Michael Phillips and his wife, Beth, New Orleans, La., and Scott Phillips and his wife, Lin Dah, Seattle, Wash., and a granddaughter, Stephanie Holmes, Pittsburgh, and four great-grandchildren, Luke Robert and Madelyn Mary Holmes; Sarah May Holmes, and Natalie Renee Phillips. Madeline is also survived by a brother-in-law, Chester Stoner, Beaver Falls; a sister-in-law, Mildred Veiock, Saxonburg, and numerous nieces and nephews.Friends will be received today, June 7, 2005, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the CAMPBELL'S NEW BRIGHTON FUNERAL HOME, 1133 Penn Ave., www.campbellfuneral homes.com.On Wednesday, June 8, 2005, Mrs. Phillips will lie in state from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church of New Brighton. The Rev. Dr. Franklin Hallman will officiate.Private interment will be in Grove Cemetery, New Brighton.
