George Adler Runstrom, 90, of Green Valley, Ariz., died May 25.
He was born on Feb. 8, 1917, the first of five children to Carl Johan and Martha Anderson Runstrom.
He graduated from East High School in Madison, Wis., where he was a member of the National Honor Society, a capella choir and co-editor of the school annual. He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin, where he was a member of the Kappa Eta Kappa electrical engineering fraternity.
He worked for United Power and Light before going to Panama to work on the Panama Canal with the Army Corps of Engineers. He then enlisted as an officer in the Navy. When he returned to the United States and visited New York City, he met Josephine (Babe) Aspenleiter. They were engaged within a month and married two months later.
The lived in Maryland, Wisconsin, Illinois and Omaha, Neb., before moving to Broomfield in 1969. His jobs included working at the mine and torpedo warfare testing station in Maryland, working at Western Electric as an engineer in Cicero, Ill., and working at Western Electric in Omaha and Broomfield.
After his retirement, he and his wife traveled across the United States and to many foreign countries and relished being grandparents, his family said. The moved to Green Valley, Ariz., in 2001, where they volunteered with the Elks, among many other activities.
He was a beloved husband, faithful father, adored grampa and loyal friend, his family said. In the two weeks before his death, he enjoyed a gathering ofall his children, most grandchildren and many friends. It was a bittersweet time as he imparted his wisdom before leaving this world, his family said.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Richard, Donald and Robert Runstrom, and a niece, Carol Celis.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Josephine Aspenleiter Runstrom; five children, Mardy (Jim) Fritsch of New Braunfels, Texas, K. Jon (MaryAnn) Runstrom of Rochester, N.Y., Judi (Kirk) Hurt of Little Rock, Ark., Erik (Lisa) Runstrom of Fort Collins, and Maja (Randy) Kaiser of Broomfield; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, a sister, Bernice (Fritz) Reichardt, of Gainsville, Fla., and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
He donated his body for research to the International Institute of Advancement for Medicine (www.iiam.org). Per his request, no funeral will be held, however, the family will celebrate his life in a memorial to be scheduled at a later date.
