Eileen D. Bennett, 87, died Dec. 15, 2010, at the Alaska Regional Hospital. Her death was the result of injuries that she sustained from a fall several days earlier.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 2222 E. Tudor Road in Anchorage. Interment of her ashes will be in Overbrook, Kan., in spring 2011.
Eileen was born in 1923 to Henry and Nellie Desque in Overbrook.
Eileen was raised on a farm in Kansas. She later graduated from college in Topeka, Kan., followed by employment with the FBI. She also worked for several physicians in Kansas prior to moving to Alaska.
After spending a lot of time as a stay-at-home mom, she decided to return to the work force and became employed with Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. and later, British Petroleum. Eileen retired in 1985.
For the last 13 years, she volunteered at the Alaska Regional Hospital with the auxiliary.
Throughout her life, Eileen inspired others with her friendliness, caring demeanor and big smile. These traits were particularly evident when she served as a volunteer with the hospital. She was also exceedingly patient and generous in her relationships with family, friends and co-workers. However, despite her overwhelming desire to help others, personally she was very independent, self reliant and would never give up on anything she decided to do. She was a loving mother, a valued friend and a giving person.
On a personal level, Eileen always loved to bake cookies, listen to good country music and spend time with her family; and, in her younger years, she loved to dance. In her words, all of those things made her very "happy-wappy." She is deeply loved and will be missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Clifford.
She is survived by her two daughters, Cherlyn Castaldo of Fairfax, Va., and Marlene "Jo" Bennett of Anchorage; and several cousins who still reside in Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions in her honor to your local food bank or the American Cancer Society .
