Margaret "Marguerite" Elizabeth Hess, n? Whisner, 93, died peacefully Tuesday morning, Dec. 1, 2009, at the home of her son in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.
She was the wife of the late Robert E. Hess, whom she wed Jan. 7, 1938.
Born Aug. 23, 1916, in Frederick, she was an accomplished musician who began giving private piano lessons in her Frederick city home in 1958 and continued for nearly 40 years. She was a past president of the Frederick BPW Club, director of the Senior Citizens Kitchen Band, member of the Frederick Piano Teachers Association and a volunteer for the American Red Cross for many years.
Although small in stature, Marguerite had a commanding personality, fiery spirit and deep devotion to her large family, for whom she prayed individually daily. She was an avid reader and committed follower of Christ.
Marguerite was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Hess; and sons, R. Michael Hess and Peter D. Hess. She is survived by two sons, Timothy W. Hess of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., and Stephen A. Hess of Frederick; a daughter, Joann Wheeler of Kincardin, Ontario; 16 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters, Ann Eanes of Wilmington, Del., Jeanne Haines of Hagerstown and M. Janice Harrison of Florida.
Family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. and a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at Evangelical Bible Church, 14700 Albert Staub Road, Thurmont.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Lutheran Home Care and Hospice, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, PA 17202.
