David B. Wertz is Dead at Benscreek- Well Known Civil War Veteran Passed Away of Dropsy in his 81st Year.
David Berkey Wertz, one of Somerset County's oldest and respected citizens died of dropsy at the Wertz farm at Benscreek at 1 o'clock this morning in his 81st year. He had been ill for a long time. Funeral servicces will be held at the Wertz home at 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon and will be in charge of the Rev. E.M. Detwiler, pastor of the Sell Street Church of the Brethren, with burial in the Wertz family graveyard along the Ligonier Pike.
D.B. Wertz was a son of John and Susan Berkey Wertz and was born in Somerset County on December 17, 1838. His father was born in 1802 and his mother in 1811. D.B. Wertz was a brother of Peter Wertz, of Logansport, Ind., Jacob Wertz, Mrs. Mary Kinsey and Mrs. Susan McCreary, all of Bedford County. He was married twice. His first wife, Mrs. Susan Cable Wertz, died in February, 1888. Later he married Susan Croyle. He is also survived by two daughters-- Mrs. A.L. Miltenberger and Mrs. Harry J. Amstead, both of Somerset County, and by nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
During the Civil War, David B. Wertz served as a member of Company H, 54th Regiment, PVI, under John O. Billheimer. He enlisted in the spring of 1862 and was with the regiment throughout the war. He was in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, in the summer of 1864, when he was shot through the lungs during the Battle of New Market. Following the battle, Mr. Wertz was made a Corporal. He was a member of Emory Fisher Post, GAR, this city, and was a member of the 54th Regimental Association.
One of his grandsons, Dr. Arthur Livingston, is serving as an officer in the British Forces in France. David B. Wertz was for many years a prominent farmer and was well known throughout Johnstown, where he disposed of much of his farm product. He was a member of the Sell Street Church of the Brethren and was an active worker in the Sunday School connected with the Eighth Ward Congregation.
