Edward J. Wegmann
1924- December 24, 2015
Upland, Calif. Edward Wegmann, age 90, died at home on December 14, 2014 after a short illness. He was born in New York, New York to George and Margaret "Ret" Wegmann (McKeon). His eldest sibling, George predeceased him; his younger brother, Kenneth survives him.
Ed grew up in New Jersey where he attended St. Leo's School in Irvington. There he met his lifelong mentor, Sister Leonie. From St. Leo's he entered Seton Hall Prep School. Following graduation he joined the U.S. Army during World War II where he served in the Army Signal Corps. Following the war, Ed extended his tour of duty and served in Germany and Austria to help with disarmament. This extended tour ignited his love for Europe and his lifelong interest in travelling. Once he returned to the U.S., Ed used the GI bill to continue his education at Rutgers University where he earned a degree in chemistry and a Masters In Business Administration.
While earning his Master's degree Ed began his career, first at Airco Research Labs and later at Bristol Myers where he was a processing engineer, supervising the production of tablets for the pharmaceutical industry. It was there that he began participating in recreational bowling leagues with friends and colleagues.
He married Dotte M. Havers, had four daughters and helped to build their house in Warren, New Jersey where they hosted many memorable Labor Day picnics. The couple divorced many years later.
While working at E.R. Squibb in New York Ed recalled having to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge in the January cold during the New York City transit strike of 1966. Later that year, Ed moved his family west to California when he took a position in Pasadena with Stuart Pharmaceuticals.
Once his children were grown Ed earned a law degree from American College of Law in l980 while still working in the pharmaceutical industry. Later, he received a Master's in Taxation from Northrup University.
Ed retired from Abbott Pharmaceuticals in South Pasadena. While he had followed the stock market for much of his life, he became a dedicated investor in retirement. He travelled widely with his companion of thirty years, Phyllis Camarena. They visited Greece, Turkey, Spain, St. Petersburg and what was then Yugoslavia. Yet, it was close to home at the Upland Public Library where Ed derived his greatest pleasure and satisfied some of his innate curiosity.
Ed was a longstanding member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Upland. He is survived by Phyllis Camarena, his brother, Kenneth, and his four daughters and their families: Nancy Riffle (Charles), Leigh Daltorio (John), Tracey Carter (Don) and Laure Minor (Rick). He also left several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family will hold a private memorial in late May at the Riverside National Cemetery.
