Barbara Luly Griesemer Birth: Sep. 15, 1829 Death: Oct. 7, 1917 From Wichita Daily Times 9 October 1917 "MORTUARY" Mrs. A.C. Griesemer died at her home in Hopedale, Ill on October 7th. She was 89 years old. Mrs. Griesemer was the mother of A.C. Griesemer who was a farmer living near Wichita Falls prior to his death in 1911. Mrs. Griesemer is survived by eight children, all living in Illinois with the exception of one daughter, who resides in Republic City, Kansas. Barbara Griesemer-Newspaper Clippings from Obit book #4 pages 136 & 137, located at the TCGS "HOPEDALE Death of a Hopedale Pioneer Oct. 8 --Mrs. Barbara Griesemer died at the Griesemer homestead north of Hopedale last evening at 6:20 o'clock, after two year of suffering, at the advanced age of 88 years and 22 days. Her husband, the late Adam Griesemer, had preceded her to the great beyond by over twenty-six years. Barbara Luly was born in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, September 18, 1829. She came to America with her parents at the age of one year, in a sailing vessel, which was storm tossed and a little over six months in making the voyage. At one time they were in immediate danger of famine, but a passing ship relieved them by supplying food. The family landed at Baltimore, Maryland. After a brief stay in there, caused by the illness of a relative, they proceeded to Pittsburg, then the western tip of civilization. Here they staid (sic) for several months, waiting for spring to come and the roads to become passable. They proceeded to Monroe county, Ohio where they settled on a partly improved farm. This was their permanent home for many years, altho Mrs. Griesemer, spend several years of her girlhood in Pittsburg, attending school and working in the factories there. While there she became personally acquainted with the Arbuckles, later the great coffee kings. They had stared the coffee roasting industry at this early date, doing the roasting on their kitchen stoves. On October 23, 1849, the subject of this sketch was united in marriage to Adam Griesemer, in Miltonsburg, Ohio. To this union ten children were born as follows: Elizabeth, who died in infancy; Adam, Jr. who died in Wichita Falls, Texas, seven years ago; Mary (Mrs. Peter Kumpf) and Theresa (Mrs. Sam Breaden), both of Pekin; Barbara (Mrs. Alva McClure), of Republic Kansas; Rosa (Mrs. George McMullen), Clara (Mrs. W.H. B. McCormick), John W., Henry S. and Charles M., all of this vicinity; H.S. Griesemer living on the old home place. Besides the eight children, she is survived by 20 grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. The family moved to Illinois, in February, 1868, and onto the farm just north of town on April 1st of that year, and have occupied it continuously since--nearly fifty years. Mrs. Griesemer and her family were members of the Catholic church. She was a staunch Christian, and trained her family in Christian persistence. While trained to rigid frugality by the necessity of pioneer conditions, yet she was ever ready to help the needy, either person or cause, from her ample store accumulated thru persistent labor and frugality. Frank in expression of word and act, her sterling worth was admired by all. Thus another of the very few remaining pioneers who helped to carve this country out of its virgin wilds to its present development of ease and luxury has passed to her reward. Most of our woods were virgin forests and our prairies wild sods be-when (sic) she came here. The funeral will be held from St. Joseph's Catholic church Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. The interment will be beside her husband in the Griesemer cemetery. Friends wishing to view the remains should do so at the house before 9:00 o'clock Wednesday morning."
