Melvin was born June 29, 1949 in Traverse City the son of Leo and Genevieve (Denoyer) Schaub. On May 13, 1972 at St. Mary's of Lake Leelanau, he married the love of his life, Mary Louise Schaub, who preceded him in death on July 5, 2019. Mel served our nation in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Mel was a loving husband, father and father-in-law. Just as Mary was the heart of the family, Melvin was the backbone. Anytime anyone needed guidance or a hand he was always there and put them first. He enjoyed working outside doing gardening and keeping his house and yard pristine. Mel enjoyed helping his boys doing projects at their homes and in the gardens driving the tractor. He also enjoyed traveling to different casinos and playing the one arm bandit with his wife and daughter. In his younger years he had worked at Grand Traverse Iron Works. He was proud to work at the Leelanau Sands Casino as a security guard and retired after 20 years. Mel is survived by his children, Leo Schaub, Tom (Lin) Schaub, Lisa (Steve) Wagner, Raymond Schaub (Tara Couturier) and Eddie Schaub; his siblings, Lonnie Schaub (Jane), Mike (Dorothy) Schaub, Sister Geneva Marie, Dorene Stone and Geneva (Jerry) Lamie; as well as his dear sisters-in-law, Erica, Fran and Beverly; many nieces and nephews; his grandchildren, Cody and Asher; his adopted-in-love grandchildren, Emma and Genevieve; and his precious cats, Fluffy and Target. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary; his parents, Leo and Genevieve (Denoyer) Schaub; and his siblings, Jermain, Urban, Bennett, Earl, Dan and Beverly. Visitation will be held at St. Mary's Church from 5 to 8 p.m., with the rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, Aug. 13. The Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., with the family greeting friends at 10 a.m., on Wednesday, Aug. 14, also at St. Mary's Church of Lake Leelanau. Fr. Bryan Medlin will serve as celebrant. Graveside services with military honors will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 1 p.m., at St. Mary's Cemetery.
