Bender dies at 87
Emil Bender, 87, of Lodi died April 30 at a local convalescent hospital following a brief illness. He was born April 7 1909 in Hebron, ND.
Mr. Bender moved to the Lodi area at a young age with his parents, John and Catherine Bender, in 1918. He married his wife, Viola Ulmer, in 1933 and farmed the area for many years.
In his youth, Mr. Bender served in the CA State Guard, which later became the National Guard. He was active in the Victor Farm Center and was the director of the San Joaquin Farm Bureau.
Mr. Bender was the president of the Lodi Memorial Hospital Board of Directors from 1949 to 1954, and served on the board for 25 years. He spent six years raising funds for the construction of the hospital, and along with eight other board members, took out personal loans to get the hospital started. He was also the first patient of the hospital's X-ray department after its construction when he was injured in a hunting accident.
Mr. Bender was named Agriculturist of the Year in 1978 for his efforts in pioneering and the manufacturing of the grape gondola. From 1976 to 1984, he served on the San Joaquin County Water Advisory Commission and was employed as a water master for the North San Joaquin Water District until his retirement in 1979.
In the 1940's, he organized a troop of Boy Scouts in the Victor area and served briefly as a scoutmaster. He served on the Road Committee for the Lodi Chamber of Commerce and the Lodi Rotary Club. He was also a volunteer for the Red Cross, the Community Chest, the United Way and the American Cancer Society. Mr. Bender also served on the board of directors for the San Joaquin County Mosquito Abatement and Vector Control District from 1977 to 1987.
Mr. Bender was also a member of the Lodi Grape and Wine Festival, serving for two years as president in 1948 and 1949. He was the first campaign manager for San Joaquin County Supervisor George Barber, and also served as campaign manager for several successful re-elections.
He was also a member of the Zion Reformed Evangelical Free Church, helping build the new church and parsonage and welding the frame for the rose window. He also served on the consistory, sang in the choir and taught Sunday School.
Mr. Bender enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting, and enjoyed making home movies and playing the harmonica.

A church service is 2pm Friday at Zion Reformed Evangelical Free Church with Pastor James Berner officiating. Committal is at Lodi Memorial Park. Visitation if 6 to 8 pm today. Thursday and 8am to noon on Friday at Lodi Funeral Home.
