Clifford John Branigan was born in Minneapolis, MN on June 26, 1894. Cliff was one of 6 children including Ethel (9/29/1891- no children), Mary (Oscar Eidem - 2 children), Joseph (3/18/1899 - Rose Tamarzck - no children), Edward (Selma - 1 child), and Edmund (Mildred) - 2 children. Cliff worked at the Plymouth Clothing House at 6th and Hennepin as a boy, and attended catholic schools including DeLasalle. He was working as a shipping clerk at Linde Air and Gas Co. when he was drafted into the Army. Cliff served in the infantry in WWI, from 1917-1919. He was wounded, suffering shrapnel wounds in his eyes, ears and face. Clifford spent a year in a Chicago military hospital and was discharged on 7/25/1919. He then attended the Saint Paul Business School and earned a certificate in accounting. He worked for White-McNaught Jewelers and then passed the civil service exam to become a letter carrier. Cliff married Gertrude Allmann on April 11,1931 and had 4 daughters, Mary Lou born 10/31, Susan born 12/8/34, Katherine born 9/12/36 and Gertrude born 9/12/36. Clifford belonged to the DAV and the VFW.
