- [S927] Obituary.
Elmer H. Brant Elmer H. Brant, the first local recipient of a miniature plutonium-power-ed heart pacemaker in October 1974, died Tuesday from a massive coronary while at work as a pipefitter for the American Bridge Co. in Ambridge. Mr. Brant, 63, a resident of Highland Road, Ingomar, received what was described at that time as "the world's smallest pacemaker" from a surgical team headed by Dr. George J. Magov-tern at Allegheny General Hospital on the North Side. The device, which weighed two ounces and was the size of a pocket watch, was powered by an isotope of Plutonium and had an expected life exceeding 20 years more than twice the lifetime of conventional nuclear pacemakers and ten times that of battery-powered models. Mr. Brant is survived by his widow, Bette Caldwell Brant; three sons William, Richard and Arthur, all of Pittsburgh; a sister, Clara Sandrock; a brother, Charles, and three granddaughters. Friends will be received until the service at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Brandt Funeral Home, 1032 Perry Highway, Perrysville. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.
