JOHN WIRTH Age 66. A resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Atherton, California, died Thursday night, June 21, in Toronto of a heart aneurism John Wirth while delivering a talk on Zebu- Ion Pike to the Friends of Fort York. A native of northern New Mexico, John was born in Dawson, near Raton, in 1936. The grandson of Gilbert Davis, manager of the coal mine in Dawson; and the son of Virginia and Cecil Wirth, John spent the first six years of his life as a faculty child at the Los Alamos Ranch School. He attended Graland and East High School in Denver and the Putney School in Vermont. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University in 1958 and received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in Latin American history in 1967. John taught contemporary Brazilian history, environmental history and Canadian History at Stanford University and held the Gildred Chair of History. He retired from Stan 1 ford in early June of this year. John also was the president of the North American Institute .based in Santa Fe, a tri-national organization devoted to bettering relations between Mexico, Canada and the United State?. John was once the president and was a current board member of the Putney School in Putney, Vermont. John loved the school where he and his sons graduated. It gave him so much with all of its unique aspects. John was an avid oudoors- man and master fly fisherman who loved spending time with .his family on the river. He had a deft cast and could land a fly in the smallest of eddies. The fish will be breathing a sigh of relief!!. Writing was John's passion, and he authored four books on Latin American History which are widely used in the field. He also co-authored eight books, including his last book on the history of the Los Alamos Ranch School, which is soon to be published by the University of New Mexico Press-. John is survived by his wife, Nancy Meem Wirth, daughter of architect, John Gaw Meem; son, Peter Wirth, Santa Fe attorney, and his wife Carol Romero- Wirth; son, Timothy Wirth, senior project manager at the Trust for Public Lands in San Francisco, and his wife Anne Stuhldreher; son, Nicholas Wirth, eleventh-grade history teacher at Santa Fe Prep, and his wife Hannah Wirth; grandson, Alexander Wirth, fourth? grader at Wood Gormley Elementary School; and granddaughters: Elena, Charlotte and Zoe Wirth. He is also survived by his brothers: Timothy Wirth and John Wiebenson; and his sisters: Carla Henebry and Mary Gilland. A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 27th at 11 a.m. at Holy Faith Episcopal Church on Palace Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the:family asks that memorials be made to either the North American Institute, 708 Paseo de Peralta, Santa Fe, 87501, or the Putney School, Elm Lea Farm, Putney Vermont, 05346.
