He was the middle child of thirteen children. He attended elementary and high school in Flasher, graduating in 1960. Leonard was known for his skill as a football player who was on a mission. This won him a scholarship to further his education. He graduated with a degree in education from UND-Ellendale Branch, Ellendale, ND in 1967. Leonard married Evangelina Nagel in 1962 and they had four children. Leonard worked construction as a heavy equipment operator for many years while attending college and during the summers of his teaching career. Leonard taught school for nearly thirty years at Ely, NV in the Social Studies Department at White Pine County School District. He served on many education committees as well as accepting the position of president of the teacher?s union for a number of years during which time generous salary raises were realized and numerous notable benefits experienced by his fellow educators. Leonard was a ?no nonsense kind of guy? when negotiating teacher benefits. As a lover of nature, Leonard enjoyed every hunting and fishing season allowed in North Dakota and Nevada; and was very knowledgeable about guns, fishing equipment, wildlife and persons who abused nature. His belief of nature was that it was a gift from God and should be enjoyed, not abused. Leonard passed this love onto his children and grandchildren, who came back to North Dakota to enjoy many hunting seasons and summer vacations. When Leonard retired from teaching, he moved to Wilton, ND to be near his family. He resided there until 2013 at which time he moved to the Baptist Home at Bismarck, ND due to his ailing health.
