Rev. Merle Wing
Rev. Merle Ward Wing of Marion died on Saturday, May 15, 2004 at his daughter's home in Marion. He was 82 years old.
He was born on May 30, 1921 in Highland Township, Osceola County, Michigan to Archie and Carlie (Lash) Wing. He married Maxine Agnes Helmboldt on May 30, 1940 in Dighton at the Wesleyan parsonage. She preceded him in death on June 1, 2001.
Mr. Wing was a pastor, entering the ministry in 1954. He pastored for 44 years at several different churches, including the Athens Indian Church in Athens; Kirkland Bible Institute of Decatur, Indiana, where he was also the president and dean on the boy's institute; and the LaSalle Gospel Tabernacle of Monroe from 1968 to 1998, where he also served as the chaplain of the Monroe County Jail. He retired from the ministry in 1998. Mr. Wing enjoyed carpentry and building furniture. He loved serving his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
He is survived by his children, Paul (Kay) Wing of Coldwater; Eloise (Russell) Kreml of Sault Ste. Marie; Danny (Marcella) Wing of Luther, Oklahoma; Yvonne (Mike) Hatfield of Marion; Dale (Debbie) Wing of Tustin; and Patricia Curtis of Cadillac; a sister, Jean Bell of East LeRoy, Michigan; twenty-six grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Melody Ann, and a son, Donald Dean, as well as a sister, Madeline Cox, and two brothers, Duane and Calcean Wing.
Funeral services for Mr. Wing will be held on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the First Nazarene Church in Cadillac, Reverend Bob Zeeryp and Reverend Steve Lalone officiating. Burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery, in Marion. Visitation will be held on Monday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Fosnaught-Holdship Funeral Home in Marion.
