Bio: Alvin C. Helgesen passed away peacefully at 87 into the kingdom of heaven on May 23, 2011. Al was the son of the late Walter and Hazel (Adams) Helgesen. He attended local schools, including the Mary D. Bradford High School in Kenosha, then served and defended his country with the Army Air Corps throughout the Pacific Theatre during his tour of duty in World War II. On April 19, 1947 he married Bernice "Bunny" Schroeder at St. George's Catholic Church in Kenosha. He committed his career to serving the local community. Between 1950 and 1956, he worked in local transit as a Kenosha Motor Coach trolley-bus operator and bus driver, and then served proudly as a Traffic Sergeant with the Kenosha Police Department from 1956 until his retirement in 1985. Following his retirement, he continued his service as a bailiff for the Kenosha Circuit Court System from 1986 until 1998. Alvin was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Kenosha and the American Legion. Alvin was an avid traveler, and enjoyed trips to many destinations throughout the United States including Texas, Nevada, and his cabin in northern Wisconsin. He enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, bowling with many of his lifelong friends, and playing Bingo with his wife of sixty-four years. He was a skilled craftsman and carpenter who spent many hours doing woodwork in his workshop, creating a wide variety of products from tables, chairs and picture frames to yard ornaments, game boards and countless other crafts. He was one of six brothers with whom he was very close, and a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin, Godfather and friend. Alvin was deeply loved and will be remembered by his wife Bernice of Kenosha, his two daughters Audrey Helgesen of Wadsworth, Illinois and Barbara "Bobbie" Helgesen of Kenosha, his two grandchildren Heather (Bodoh) Bliss of Kenosha and Shane Bodoh of Oak Brook, Illinois, and his three great-grandsons Zachariah, Tyler and Dakota Bliss, all of Kenosha. A brother, Edward Helgesen of Roswell, New Mexico, also survives him. Four brothers ... Walter, Robert, George Helgesen and Fred Allemand ... preceded him in death. Mass of Christian Burial for Alvin was held on Saturday, May 28th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Entombment with full military honors followed at the All Saints Mausoleum. Visitation was held on Friday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Bruch Funeral Home and again on Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Memorials to the Hospice Alliance are appreciated. "We will shed tears that you have gone, but we shall smile that you have lived."
