Obituary for Norma Elizabeth Schwarz
Norma Elizabeth Schwarz, 100, of Baldwin City, KS. died November 10, 2010.
Funeral services will be held Monday, November 15, at 1:30 PM at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Baldwin City, KS. with burial to follow in St. John’s cemetery adjacent to the church. The family will accept visitors at the church beginning one hour prior to the service.
Born June 30, 1910, to John and Sophia (Haas) Stoebener in rural Douglas County, KS, Norma was a lifelong resident of the Baldwin City area. She attended Central School which was a one room school house. She met and married Walter J. Schwarz on October 9, 1935, at St. John’s E&R Church. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage before Walter’s death on October 7, 1997.
Norma loved reading. She belonged to several book clubs. She especially enjoyed reading Roy Rogers and Dale Evans books. She also enjoyed making quilts and afghans and baking cookies at Christmas. She routinely sent cards to everyone in the community for birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions. She loved her grandchildren, canning, gardening and raising chicks.
In 1999 she received the Soil Conservation Award from the Douglas County Soil Conservation group. She was a lifetime member of the St. John’s United Church of Christ. She was also a member of the Women’s Fellowship at St. John’s and the Jolly Sister’s Club of Worden.
Norma is survived by her son, Allan Schwarz and his wife Darlene, Baldwin City, KS; two grandsons, Scott Schwarz and his wife Shannon, Topeka, KS, and Eric Schwarz, Olathe, KS; three great grandchildren, Allison, Ashley and Samuel Schwarz, all of Topeka, KS; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers, Arnold, Walter, Oscar and Otto Stoebener; and one sister, Pauline Johanning.
The family suggests memorials be made to St. John’s United Church of Christ or Midland Hospice and sent in care of Lamb-Roberts Funeral Homes, P.O. Box 64, Baldwin City, KS, 66006.
