VASSAR --- Belva Jane Scheid, 84, Vassar, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at an Osage City care facility.
Mrs. Scheid went to work as a clerk in the Vassar Post Office and retired as postmaster after 20 years of service.
She was born Oct. 1, 1918, north of Pomona, the daughter of John and Pansy Hutchison Bowman. She was raised near Pomona and graduated from Pomona High School in 1938. She lived most her life near the Vassar community.
Mrs. Scheid was a member of Vassar United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She organized Vassar Economic Home Unit in 1950 and was a member of the unit for 41 years. She served on the Extension Board for 13 years, was a 4-H leader for 46 years and was on the Fair Board at Osage City for 20 years.
She married Gerald Scheid on May 2, 1944, in Pomona. He survives.
Other survivors include five sons, Ron and his wife, Janice and Glen and his wife, Susan, all of Tulsa, Okla., Keith and his wife, Jan, Osage City, Dale and a companion, April Bridges, and Robert, all of Scranton; a sister, Audrey Priebe, Osage City; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Mrs. Scheid was preceded in death by a son, Larry Scheid.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Feltner Funeral Chapel in Lyndon. Burial will be in Vassar Cemetery. Mrs. Scheid will lie in state after 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel, where visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to Vassar United Methodist Church or the Osage City Fair Board Building Fund and sent in care of the funeral home, Box 160, Lyndon, 66451.
