She was born April 23, 1913, near Miltonsburg, Ohio, daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret Schafer Burkhart. She was a member of Barnesville Assumption Catholic Church of Barnesville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex Hayes; two sisters, Marie Burkhart and Helen Burkhart. Surviving are two brothers: John Burkhart and Charles Burkhart both of Woodsfield; three sisters, Gertrude Harding of Ashland, Martha Kress of Lewisville, and Alice Yaaarus of Zanesville, Ohio. Burial at Crestview Cemetery, Barnesville, Ohio.
