Bio: OVERBROOK --- Karen Kay Stahel, 60, was killed in a farm accident Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at her home northeast of Overbrook.Ms. Stahel farmed and taught school at Tecumseh South Elementary School. She earlier taught fourth-graders in Carbondale Grade School from 1963 to 1965 and first- and fourth-graders at Tecumseh North Elementary School from 1965 to 1969. She taught kindergarten at Tecumseh South part-time in 1983 to 1986 and had taught fifth-grade classes at Tecumseh South since 1988. She also was a summer administrator at Tecumseh North Elementary School.She drove a school bus for Unified School District No. 434 for several years.She was born March 2, 1942, near Overbrook, to William Wilson and Helen Maxine Desque Karnes. She graduated as valedictorian from Overbrook High School in 1960. She earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1963 and a master's degree in special education in 1967, both at Emporia State Teachers College. She earned certification in educational administration in 2000. Ms. Stahel was a member of Overbrook United Methodist Church and an 11-year member and leader of the North Osage 4-H Club. She was a former member of the Searchlight Club at Overbrook and served as an usher at Kansas State University football games during the 2002 season.Ms. Stahel served Unified School District 450 as a member of the superintendent's council in 2002-2003, was a mentor teacher for new staff and had acted as principal during the absence of building administrators. She was a member of the National Education Association and the Shawnee Heights Education Association.She also was a member of Overbrook United Methodist Church, its administrative board and was active in Adventure Time activities.She married Gary Stahel on Nov. 2, 1964.Survivors include a son, Curtis W. Stahel, Carbondale; a daughter, Laurie Ann Calvin, Topeka; her mother, Maxine Karnes, Overbrook; a sister, Joyce James, Dallas; and two grandsons.Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Overbrook. Burial will be in Overbrook Cemetery. Ms. Stahel will lie in state from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Greenwood-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home in Overbrook, where visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m.Memorial contributions may be made to Tecumseh South Elementary Library and sent in care of the funeral home.Topeka Capital-Journal, The, Nov 21, 2002
