Her parents Thomas and Lucinda brought her and her sister Lucinda to America in 1888. He worked as a miner in Butte, Montana, but apparently left the family in the 1890s to go to Canada to find a better job. They never heard from him again. When Mary's mother died in 1894, she and her sister were put in a the new state orphanage. Her sister was adopted, but Mary stayed there until she was old enough to leave. She married Henry Joseph Dietz in Livingston, Montana on June 12, 1900. They had their first child in Livingston and then moved to Spokane, Washington where the other 3 were born. Tragically Mary fell onto the pointed end of an umbrella which gouged her eye causing a terrible wound that never healed. She was finally bedridden and died in 1922.
