MAURICE EARL HEARD JR. HIGHLANDS Maurice Earl Heard Jr., beloved husband of 51 years to Terese Schaefer Heard, passed away at his Highlands, N.C. home on Thursday, September 11, 2008. Earl was born in Lanett Alabama on December 12, 1927, the eldest of three sons born to Josephine Betts Heard and Maurice Earl Heard Sr. Earl and Terese have been year-round residents of Highlands for over 38 years. Earl and his family discovered Highlands during a move from Lubbock, Texas to Philadelphia in 1940. After his family passed through Highlands, Earl vowed that one day he would return to the mountains. Following his early education in Lanett and Lubbock, Earl attended Auburn Uni versity and Georgia Tech, and thereafter began a care-Rev. er in the textile business ris-ciating. ing to become vice president of international sales for a textile machinery company in Easley, S.C. After travel-friends ing the world, he fulfilled his desire1 to reside full time in Highlands. In 1970 Earl established himself in the real estate and insurance business in Highlands. His office was a social gathering place for those who favored . the game of Bridge, and his twice daily bridge games ran for over 25 years. Earl also served as president of the Rotary Club and as a Ward-Center. on in the Episcopal Church. Earl is survived by his wife, Terese; three sons and daughters-in-law and six grandsons, Dr. Tripp Heard and his wife, Lauren Heard, and their three sons, Camer- on, Samuel and Zachary re- side in Boca Raton, Fla.; Mike Heard, FBI (retired) and his wife, Carolyn, and tneir sons' Christopher and Jeffrey reside in Ponte Ve- dra Beacn and Jonn H.f ri' PM01 fo.r, U?S a"d his fe' Gigi, reside m Ozone, lenn John s son, Jonathan, 'eside.s ln.
