Bio: Joan's parents are John Joseph Tomsyck and Mary Jogadzinski. Her known siblings are John, Donald, Dorothy and Mae Tomsyck.She married John Orin Leahigh. Their known children are John William, Ann, Maria Elena and Lisa Leahigh. She served as the Director of the Office of Social Justice for approximately 20 years. During the 1960s, she and her husband spent 5 1/2 years in a Peace-Corp-type program of the Catholic church in Latin America serving in the countries of Mexico, Peru, Chile, and Venezuela. Their missionary experience inspired their move to New Mexico in 1967 and their work for social justice causes. Issues most important to her were access to universal health care and economic and environmental justice. She participated in many groups that supported these efforts. One of these most dear to her was the Christmas Store, which empowers parents of families in need to provide clothing, shoes, and toys for their children. Another was the health security for New Mexican's legislative campaign. She graduated from Marquette University with a degree in Journalism and worked briefly at the Star News in Medford, Wisconsin.
