His siblings are Mary Kay and William J Leahigh.He married Joan Tomsyck, October 25, 1958. Their known children are John William, Ann, Maria Elena and Lisa Leahigh. A deacon at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, social justice advocate, and former UPI staffer. His career as a UPI newsman spanned the early '50's through the early '80's. He served at UPI bureaus in Milwaukee, Detroit, and at the Albuquerque office from 1968 until it was closed in 1984. He and his wife spent 5 1/2 years in a Peace-Corps-type program of the Catholic Church in Latin America serving in the countries of Mexico, Peru, Chile, and Venezuela. His missionary experience inspired his work in social justice causes. He was co-organizer of the Chimayo/Los Alamos Prayer Pilgrimage for Peace which celebrates its 19th year this month on April 21, 2001; organizer of the Christmas Store for low income families; and promoter of the New Mexico SHARE food program. He was involved in various community activities including immigrant rights, civil rights, and peace issues. He was ordained a deacon in July of 1993 and has spent his entire deaconate career at St. Charles. Following the Korean War in the Air Force he graduated from Marquette University with a degree in business administration. He did graduate studies in Journalism there and at Wayne University in Detroit.
