Bio: Raymond Harris EmmersonObituaryJune 11, 1918 ~ June 18, 2014 Raymond Harris Emmerson, Sr., age 96, lifetime resident of Birmingham, AL, passed away at his home on Wednesday, June 18, 2014. Mr. Emmerson served as a Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific. Prior to his military service, he was employed by WAPI Radio as a sports announcer. Following the war, he was employed by the Birmingham News for 48 years, serving his latter years as Advertising Director and Associate Sales and Marketing Director. He was a member of the Monday Morning Quarterback Club having served as Captain in 1956. He served with numerous other civic and charitable organizations including the American Red Cross, Downtown Rotary Club and the Lions Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Jesse and Marie Schilling Emmerson, sister, Ruth Emmerson Hart, and granddaughter, Abby Elise Emmerson. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Doris Diffly Emmerson, A funeral mass will be held at 1:00 on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at The Cathedral of St. Paul's. Visitation will be held at The Cathedral prior to the mass beginning at 12:30. Following the funeral mass, an interment will take place at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to The Cathedral of St. Paul's Capital Campaign Fund at P.O. Box 10044, Birmingham, AL, 35202, or The Crippled Children's Foundation, c/o The Monday Morning Quarterback Club at 2019 Fourth Avenue North, Birmingham, AL, 35202.
