Bio: Harold E. Scaggs, 83, of Liberty, Indiana died at his home after a brief illness on Friday, July 9, 2010. He was born June 1, 1927 in Liberty, Indiana the son of Perry and Mamie (Virgin) Scaggs. He married Marilyn R. Apsley on May 1, 1948 at the Liberty Church of Christ Parsonage in Liberty, Indiana. He attended Short High School in Liberty until he joined the military on May 17, 1945. A Navy Veteran of World War II he spent most of his service time in Guam until he was honorably discharged on August 18, 1946. He was the recipient of the Victory Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal. After the War he returned to Liberty where he began working in petroleum in 1949 as an oil distributer. In 1959 he became owner and operator of Scaggs Oil Company and in 1989 he opened the Scaggs Service Station in Liberty. His well-deserved retirement came in 2006 when he sold the company. Harold was a member of the Liberty Church of Christ. He and his wife enjoyed traveling throughout the United States in their motorhome. He loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. Harold was a car enthusiast and had a true appreciation of how they were made. He is survived by his Wife of 62 years, Marilyn Scaggs; Daughter and Son-in-law, Bonita and Randy Hughes; Son and Daughter-in-law, Kenny and Beverly Scaggs; Son, Mike Scaggs; Son and Daughter-in-law, Doug and Bonnie Scaggs; and Daughter and Son-in-law, Paula and Tom Wildman; and Brother, Hubert Scaggs, all of Liberty, Indiana; and 17 Grandchildren and 11 Great-Grandchildren. In addition to his Parents he was preceded in death by his Granddaughter, Callie Scaggs. Private services for immediate and extended family will be on Tuesday, July 13, 2010. The Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon at Cook Funeral Home, 929 Main Street, Brookville, Indiana 47012. The Funeral Service will immediately follow the Visitation beginning at 12:00 Noon. David Soper, Pastor of the Liberty Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will be in Sims Cemetery in New Fairfield, Indiana with Military Graveside Honors provided by the National Guard Honor Guard of Indianapolis and American Legion Post #122 of Liberty. In lieu of flowers it was Harold's preference that memorial donations be directed to either the American Heart Association, 6100 W. 96th Street, Suite 200, Indianapolis, Indiana 46278-6005; the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22538, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73123-1538; or the Liberty Church of Christ, 102 S. Main Street, Liberty, Indiana 47353 or to a Charity of the Donor's Choice.
