Robert R. Schlichting January 13, 2011 Bob served four years in WW II, three years at various training schools learning to be a naval officer and one year as a gunnery officer on the heavy cruiser USS Augusta. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and spent two years as operations officer aboard the destroyer USS Caperton. He was discharged from the Navy in May 1959 as a lieutenant, having spent 10 years in various active and inactive rolls. Bob graduated from Rutgers University as a certified public accountant and worked for several CPA firms in New York City. He then worked for the Carborundum Company in Niagara Falls, NY, until 1973. He joined the Crouse-Hinds Company, where he became vice president of Finance and Planning, retiring in 1989. He served on the town of Manlius Planning Board and was chairman of the board eight years. He was honored with an engraved silver tray after having been founder and president of the Horseshoe Lane Homeowners Association for 25 years. He was active in his church and being an avid sailor took his senior Sunday School class sailing every year. He enjoyed sailing on Lake Ontario with his family and friends. He was also on the board of the Salvation Army for many years. After a long and courageous fight against Parkinson's disease, he is now with his guardian angels. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruth Eastman Schlichting; a son, Peter Robert Schlichting and daughter-in-law Donna; a daughter, Nancy S. Ackerman; a brother, Arthur J. and sister in-law Donna Schlichting, He has three grandchildren, Nicolette and Devin Schlichting and Cheryl Waite Bridges, and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his elder daughter, Kathryn S. Waite, on January 12, 2011. There are no calling hours. Donations in remembrance of Bob may be made to either the First Presbyterian Church, 118 Arch St., Chittenango NY 13037 or the Salvation Army, 677 South Salina St., Syracuse, NY 13202. A memorial service celebrating Bob's life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 3, 2011, which would have been Bob's 87th birthday, at the First Presbyterian Church in Chittenango. Zimmer Funeral Home, Cazenovia-Chittenango, is in charge of arrangements.
