Bio: Louis Schaechter, 83, a resident of the Viola community for more than 60 years, died in St. Anthony's hospital, Rock Island, Saturday, Dec. 17, 1955, where he had been a patient seven weeks.Mr. Schaechter, a retired farmer, was born Mar. 26, 1872, at Howenstein, Bavaria, Germany, and came with his parents to the United States at the age of three. He was married May 10, 1899, to Miss Ida Roettler at Viola. Mrs. Schaechter preceded her husband in death Dec. 4, 1955.Surviving are three sons, Father Louis Schaechter, pastor of St. Mary's church, Tiskilwa, Ill., John and Charles, both of Viola; four daughters, Mrs. Agnes Mack, Viola; Mrs. Josephine Carlson, Phoenix, Ariz.; Mrs. Marjorie Steiner, Sacramento, Calif.; and Genevieve Flaherty, Reynolds, in whose home her parents had resided the past two years. Surviving also are 27 grandchildren.Preceding him in death were his wife, his parents, a daughter, Mrs. Catherine Mohr, a sister and two brothers.Prayers were said at the Crummy Funeral home in Viola on Monday evening, at 7:30.Funeral services were held from the funeral one on Tuesday at 9:30 a. m. and at 10 a. m. from St. John's Catholic church. His son, Father Schaechter, was celebrant of the Solemn High Mass. Father L. A. Wojciechowski, pastor of St. Mary's church Moline, was deacon, and Father Hecht of Keithsburg served as sub-deacon.Rev. C. M. Meyer, the church pastor, gave the sermon.Interment was in St. John's cemetery at Viola. Pallbearers were Robert Schaechter, Denny and Tony Mack, Bert Mack, and John McVeigh.(Aledo Times Record, December 21, 1955)
