Bio: Graveside service for Art Cunningham, 94, Lawton, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at Frederick Cemetery with Shane Kendrix officiating.Mr. Cunningham passed away Thursday, April 14, 2016, in Lawton.Services are under direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home.Mr. Cunningham was born Nov. 1, 1921, in Pond Creek to Arthur and Clara Cunningham. He graduated from Pond Creek Schools in 1940. Art earned a football scholarship to Oklahoma City University, which was interrupted by WWII. He joined the Air Force Reserve Cadet/Pilot training program, graduating at Lubbock Army Air Field as a second lieutenant officer. At war's end, he graduated from Oklahoma City University in 1946. He taught school, including coaching until 1949, when he moved to Ponca City. He then represented Business Men's Assurance Company of Kansas City, selling life, health and accident coverage. In 1970, he entered the real estate business as a licensed broker. While in Ponca City, he was a member of Jaycees, serving as president and a member of Kiwanis Club, serving as president. He served as Kay County Chairman of the March of Dimes for several years. He married Mary Remy Cunningham in 1946. Their children are Carole Cunningham, Arcadia, Calif.; Patti Riley, Lawton; and Crystal Krause, Lawrence, Kan. In 1977, Art moved to the Frederick area. He built and sold homes under the Farmer's Home Administration. He married Anita Vite Cunningham. They served as hosts from 1987 to 1995 to the WWII returning airmen who had trained and served at Frederick Army Field. He served as a chairman of the America Red Cross and as a president of Lions Club. He served an interim term on the Property and Casualty Board of the Oklahoma Insurance Department, appointed by Gov. George Nigh and approved by the state Senate.After moving to Lawton in 2004, he married Virginia Thompson Cunningham. She passed away in 2014.Survivors include three daughters; a grandson, Courtney Glass; a granddaughter, Laura Timberlake; a grandson, Beau Timberlake; and great-grandchildren: Jacob Glass, Nathan Glass, Leah Glass, Kylei Nunley and Rixon Nunley.
