Cook, 96, of Sheridan, WY, died Saturday, June 25, 2005 in Westview Health Care Center. Mr. Cook had lived in Sheridan the past 46 years, coming from Gillette & Clearmont, WY where he had resided for 43 years.Mr. Cook was born February 26, 1909 in Mason City, Nebraska to Arden and Bertha (Hauck) Cook. The family moved to a homestead 35 miles south of Gillette, WY when Leon was 7 years old. Mr. Cook attended country schools and graduated from Campbell County High School in 1929.Leon married Nola Osborn November 20, 1930 in Gillette. The couple rented the Loyd Rust place south of Gillette for 19 years where Mr. Cook farmed, and raised sheep and cattle. Two children were born during this time, Edward Cook, and Helen Cook Mitchell. Mr. Cook also sold Farm Bureau Auto Insurance, and was one of their first agents. In 1950, the Cook's bought one of the Leiter estate ranches belonging to John Rice on Clear Creek near Clearmont and raised beets, wheat, oats, alfalfa, and raised registered Columbia sheep. The Cooks sold the ranch in 1958 to George Schuman and moved to Sheridan where Mr. Cook went to work for K. B. Tractor Co. as parts manager. While working for K. B. Tractor Co. Leon received a Sheridan Press Friendliness-Courtesy award. Leon retired in 1968 due to a shoulder injury.Mrs. Cook passed away on January 12, 1959. Mr. Cook married Lucile Johnson in Sheridan in February of 1963, and she passed away in March of 1998. Mr. Cook resided in Sugarland Ridge from 1999 to 2003 when he moved to Westview Health Care Center.Mr. Cook belonged to the Sheridan Gem and Mineral Society, was a life member of Sheridan Elk's Lodge #520, the Fraternal Order of Eagles #186, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows #19 in Sheridan. He loved to cut and polish rocks, making miniature furniture and creating airplanes from aluminum cans, and had many other crafts. Leon volunteered a lot of his time at the YMCA getting memberships. He showed movies at the Sheridan Manor, belonged to the Polka Club, attended fiddlers contests, festivals, going on field trips, and sightseeing in their camper.Mr. Cook was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, & one sister.Leon is survived by one son, Edward Cook, of Buffalo, WY; one daughter, Helen Mitchell, of Sheridan, WY; 5 stepchildren; 7 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and 2 great, great grandchildren.Funeral service for Mr. Cook will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, June 30, 2005 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with officers of the Sheridan Elk's Lodge #520 officiating. Interment will be in the Elk's Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.Memorials in memory of Mr. Cook may be made to the Elk's Building Fund, the Sheridan Senior Center, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
