Mrs. Edward F. Wegmann, ne Shirley Helen Caire, died at home on Friday, December 16, 2016, after a brief illness. She was a life-long resident of New Orleans. Born on January 12, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Louise Fabacher Caire and Dr. Arthur A. Caire, Jr. After graduating from Holy Name of Jesus, she attended Sophie Newcomb College. She married the love of her life, Edward F. Wegmann, on April 7, 1945, after he returned from service with the U. S. Navy in the Pacific Theater. Together, they had three children, all of whom survive her: Cynthia Anne Wegmann, wife of James A. Babst; Edward Dirk Wegmann, husband of Susan Cambon Wegmann; and Randall Roy Wegmann, husband of Allison Steele Wegmann. A matriarch in the truest sense, Mrs. Wegmann was the linchpin of a family that included her husbands' ten brothers and her own seven siblings, all of whom predeceased her; many nieces and nephews; and her grandchildren-Cynthia Morgan Babst, James Anthony Babst, Jr. ("Beau"), Edward Dirk Wegmann, Jr., Lauren Wegmann Walker, John Caire Wegmann, and Avery Allison Wegmann-and great granddaughter, Elizabeth Anne Habig, all of whom survive her. Her loving dominion extended beyond the bounds of even so large a family to include all animals (but especially dogs), many dear friends, the priests at St. Mathias and St. Rita, her children's and grandchildren's classmates, neighbors on Broadway and Versailles Boulevard, those who worked for her, and many others. She cooked, beautifully and in quantity, employing her grandchildren in more recent times, to assist with the preparation of holiday feasts, gumbo, lasagna, aspic, pecan pies, and other delicacies, and to serve, or distribute, the bounty to always grateful family, neighbors, and friends. She will be dearly missed, but never forgotten, by the many who knew and loved her. The burial at Lake Lawn Cemetery will be private. A memorial mass will be celebrated at a future date. Donations may be made in her honor to the Little Sisters of the Poor, St. Michael's School, or a charity of your choice.
