Bio: Robert Walter Turner of St. Simons Island, Georgia and Friends Lake, New York died at his southern home on January 23, 2014. Bob succumbed to cancer just 33 days shy of his 87th birthday. He lived his life with zest, good humor, and achievement, having great love and pride of his family and making many lasting friendships.Bob was born on February 25, 1927 in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky to Catherine and Roy Turner. After graduating high school in 1945 at Kentucky Military Institute, Bob was drafted into the U.S. Army, completed basic training, and was assigned to intense training in the Japanese language at Yale University. Following honorable discharge from the Army, Bob continued at Yale, earning a BS degree in Chemical Engineering in 1951. While at Yale, Bob fell in love with and married local nurse Ann Castonguay. Bob and Ann would become the wonderful parents of their four sons and one daughter. The young chemical engineer joined Hercules Incorporated in Wilmington, Delaware in 1951. He advanced through research and sales positions in Michigan, Ohio, and Texas, and returned to Wilmington in 1962 where he held several upper management positions. In 1976, Bob made St. Simons Island his permanent home when he became Plant Manager of the Hercules facility in Brunswick, Georgia. After retiring from Hercules in 1979, he became Vice President of SCM Organics (now Renessenz) in Jacksonville, Florida. His career took an interesting turn in 1981 when Bob became Executive Director of the Brunswick Port Authority, which he led for six years. After the state acquired the port from the city Authority, Bob continued in the shipping business, and co-founded Troika International, a highly successful maritime freight brokerage firm where he worked until retirement. In addition to his work career, Bob Turner was active in his community, serving on the boards of directors of SunTrust Bank of Southeast Georgia, the Brunswick/Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce, Business Council of Georgia, and the American Association of Port Authorities. He was a member of the Glynn County Airport Commission for several years, including serving as its chairman. He was a long time member of the Rotary Club and Ivy League Club, and was an active supporter of his alma mater, Yale University.Bob was fortunate to have a loving second marriage with Doris Eagan Turner. Bob and Doris together purchased a lakefront summer home in the Adirondacks which they named "Summersong", a reflection of their mutual love of music. Bob and Doris spent many happy years together at their two homes. Bob developed strong bonds with Doris' children as well as his own.Bob is survived by his five children: John Turner and wife Nancie of Newark, Delaware; Steve Turner of Atlanta, Georgia; Jim Turner and wife Meg of St. Simons Island; Richard Turner and wife Lisa of Geneva, Illinois; and Terri Mikowski and husband Glen of St. Simons Island. He took great joy in his nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews, all of whom survive him. He was predeceased by his wife Ann C. Turner in 1991, his wife Doris E. Turner in 2011, his brother John, and his sister Marilyn. Bob Turner loved life and being with people. He, with both Ann and Doris, hosted great parties for his many friends featuring live music and dancing. Bob was a world traveler and was particularly fond of cruises. He was quite the handyman and usually had a home project under way. He enjoyed golf and was a long-time member of Sea Palms golf resort. In accordance with Bob's wishes, he was cremated and a funeral service will not be held. In the near future his children will host a celebration of his life for his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Bob to Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525.
