Phyllis Marie Memmer
Phyllis Marie Memmer, 89, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, at St. Anthony Nursing Center in Lafayette. Born February 11, 1928 in Stockwell, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Hazel (Crose) Linedecker.
On November 6, 1954, she married Harold F. "Budd" Memmer, Jr. He preceded her in death on February 16, 1976.
Phyllis enjoyed meeting people and making friends, including the thousands of Purdue students, faculty and staff who crossed her path during the years she worked as head cashier at Hawkins Graduate House. Following her retirement from Purdue, Phyllis began a second "career" at the St. Elizabeth Hospital gift shop, where she logged close to 10,000 hours of volunteer time, and made countless more friends.
Phyllis loved spending time with her children and their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Realizing she was surrounded by a family of sports fanatics, she eventually took the saying, "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" to heart and became, arguably, the biggest fan of them all. She criss-crossed the state attending her granddaughters' basketball and softball games, loved the Cubs, and never missed a Purdue game on TV. And on her daily walks
around the hallways at St. Anthony, she was known for greeting friends and staff with a hearty, "Boiler up!" Her other hobbies included watching soap operas, making Christmas ornaments for family and friends, and baking - especially holiday cookies and her famous "Check" mix.
Surviving is a daughter, Cheryl Hazelgrove, of Lafayette, and a son, Mike Memmer, of Winfield, Illinois, along with son-in-law Roger Hazelgrove, and daughter-in-law Kelly Memmer, whom she loved as if they were her own children; also surviving are the apples of her eye, grandchildren
Katie Hazelgrove-Nielson (Jim), and Natalie Hazelgrove Carey, and great-grandchildren Avery and Andrew Nielson, and Benjamin Carey, and a stepson, Harold "Skipp" Memmer III (Jane) of Las Vegas, In addition to her husband and parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Garrett, and a brother, Albert Linedecker, Jr.
The family would like to thank the kind and caring staff at St. Anthony, whom Phyllis adored.
