Bio: Father John L. (Larry) Hein, S.J., died at Our Lady of Wisdom Health Care Center in New Orleans, LA. at 4:55 PM on Saturday, December 22, 2001. Father Hein had been in and out of the hospital the past two months, suffering severe blood clots, and he died of pulmonary and cardiac failure. Father was born in New Orleans, LA. on May 29, 1921 of John Lawrence Hein and Norma Leary Hein. He grew up in Incarnate Word Parish in New Orleans, LA and graduated from Jesuit High School before entering the Jesuit Novitiate at Grand Coteau, LA. on August 14, 1938. He studied Philosophy at Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL and after teaching three years at Jesuit High School, Shreveport, LA; he finished theology at St. Mary's College, Kansas, being ordained a priest there in 1951. After teaching for a short period at Jesuit High School, Dallas, TX., his ministry was mostly giving retreats in Convent, LA., Atlanta, GA. and New Orleans, LA., though he also served as an associate pastor at Jesuit Parishes in Albuquerque, NM, Mobile, AL and Grand Coteau, LA. From 1961 to 1977, he was director and superior of Ignatius Retreat House in Atlanta, GA. From 1983 until the opening of Our Lady of Wisdom three years ago. Father was a Chaplin and Retreat Director at the Cenacle Retreat House in Metairie, LA. When he retired to Our Lady of Wisdom, he served as a chaplain there as his health permitted. He is survived by a uncle, Albert Leary of Austin, TX, an aunt, Rita Robichaux of New Orleans, LA. and cousin in Louisiana and Texas. Because Father donated his body to Tulane Medical Center, there will be no immediate Funeral Mass. A Memorial Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at the Chapel of Our Lady of Wisdom, 5600 General DeGaulle Drive, New Orleans (Algiers), LA. on Thursday, January 3, 2002 at 2:00 PM followed by a memorial reception. His cremains will be buried later at the Jesuit Cemetery at Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL.(Times-Picayune, The (New Orleans, LA) December 26, 2001, p.: 5)
