James Lee Hoff was born March 29, 1931 in Richardton, ND to Lee and Elizabeth (Froelich) Hoff. He grew up on a sheep and cattle ranch south of Leith on the Cannonball River. Jim attended country schools and graduated in 1949 from the Assumption Abbey in Richardton, ND. While in high school he played six man football. In 1952 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Jim was stationed at Kirtland Air Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Lundstahl Air Base in Germany. After being discharged in 1956 Jim returned to the ranch.
Jim was united in marriage with Judy Hoffman on June 2, 1958 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Flasher. Jim ranched with his dad; they raised sheep and cattle, eventually focusing on Herefords. He was very proud of his cattle and won many awards with his carloads of feeder steers at the Lemmon Livestock show. Jim also was one of the first in the area to own a truck mounted haystack mover and made many friends moving hay. Jim and Judy raised their nine children on the ranch. They ranched until 2005 when they moved to Carson.
Jim was a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was also on the Mor-Gran-Sou Board for many years.
Jim's greatest joys were his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His greatest legacy to his children was his quiet display of faith. They have all looked to him as an example of how to raise their own families. He was quick to forgive and so proud of his children. Jim never managed to stay angry with them. Jim loved having his family come spend time on the ranch. Many grandkids remember their grandpa taking them out on the tractor or tagging along to see a calf being born.
Jim was a true cowboy. He raised registered quarter horses, some of which his grandkids rode at the National High School Finals Rodeo. He liked watching boxing and went to many rodeos. Jim and Judy loved attending high school sporting events, especially football. After all their sons graduated, they continued to attend home and away games and received the first ever Fan Appreciation Award from the Carson school. Over the years, Jim enjoyed all the friends and relatives that came to hunt on his beautiful Cannonball River ranch. His generosity, warmth, and sense of humor made him many friends throughout his life.
Jim is survived by his wife of 52 years, Judy, four sons, Jim (Karen), Melrose, MN, Bob (Kathy), Leith, ND, David (Miracle), Fargo, ND, Wayne (Beth), LaMoure, ND; five daughters, Mary Locati (Jim Jensen), Spearfish, SD, Beth (John) Dinneen, Bismarck, ND, Jamie Hoff, Reno, NV, Cathy (Joe) Miller, Spearfish, SD, Jeanie Hoff, Aurora, CO; 26 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, one brother, Lee and Karol Hoff, Elgin, ND; three sisters, LeeAnn Hoff, Boston, MA, Marie Hoff, Bismarck, ND, Bernadine Hoff, Bismarck, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Ken, and one sister, Eileen, who died in infancy.
A memorial can be sent to Home on the Range, The God's Child Project, Prairie Learning Center, or a charity of choice that helps teenagers.
Visitations will be from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Elgin and one hour prior to the service at St. Theresa's Catholic Church.
