Bio: Alma (Thurn) Keszler of Eureka had always loved to bake and people would beg her to show them how she made her wonderful rolls, or "buns" as they called them. Oven dishes were her specialties, such as her scalloped potatoes.After her death on Tuesday, July 8, 2008, one of her brothers asked, "Did anyone check her freezer to see if she left any kuchen?" Alma was also skilled at embroidery and left drawers full of beautiful dishtowels and pillowcases to be shared among her children. She was also an avid reader, reading books she either bought or exchanged with other readers.She was born Dec. 10, 1915, the daughter of John A. and Christina (Beck) Schick, on their farm southwest of Eureka in Campbell County. She received her formal education at the rural Lake School. On June 16, 1935, Alma married Rudolph G. Thurn at Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka and they settled on the Thurn farm seven miles southeast of Eureka. He died unexpectedly on Aug. 11, 1968. She stayed briefly on the farm and then moved to Aberdeen to stay with her sister, Martha, and to work in the dietary department at St. Luke's Hospital.In the spring of 1970, she returned to Eureka and lived with her recently widowed brother, Milbert. She married Lorenz Keszler at Milbert's home on Sept. 19, 1970. They settled in Eureka where Lorenz served as the McPherson County Sheriff from 1964 to 1978. In addition to her own two sons, Alma was mother to three stepsons and a stepdaughter. Lorenz died Dec. 7, 2005, and Alma continued to live at home in Eureka until she died at the Eureka Community Hospital.She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the women's group. She was in a bowling league in her younger days and liked to play Scrabble. Surviving Alma are her sons, Rodney (Janice) Thurn of Aberdeen and John G. (Brenda Trauman) Thurn of Eureka; stepsons, Leland (Phyllis) Keszler of Mobridge, Jerry (Marlene) Keszler of Grass Lake, Mich., and Richard Keszler of Fargo, N.D.; stepdaughter Bernice (Maynard Downen) Goehring of Rapid City; two brothers, the Rev. Edwin (Barbara) Schick of Dubuque, Iowa, and Milbert W. (Frances) Schick of Eureka; one sister, Elsie (Lester) Heilman of Eureka; three grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, 10 step grandchildren and 15 step great grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her mother on Aug. 27, 1974, her father on Feb. 28, 1983, both husbands, two brothers, Otto and Ruben who died in infancy, and one sister, Martha Conlon.Services for Alma were Friday, July 11, at Zion American Lutheran Church in Eureka with Pastor Linda Wahlstrom officiating. Casketbearers were Tarah Jahnig of Aberdeen, A.J. Jahnig of St. Paul, Minn., Chad Thurn of Oshkosh, Wis., and Jim Mulder, Charlie B. Hoffman and Glenn Beutler, all of Eureka.Burial followed at the church cemetery with Lien-Straub Funeral Chapel of Eureka in charge of arrangements.Mobridge Tribune July 16, 2008
