- [S927] Obituary.
Charles Henry Burkhart Charles Henry Burkhart of Milford went to Heaven on Sunday, October 21, 2001 in St. Francis Hospital, Wilmington, DE, following a long illness. He was 71. Mr. Burkhart was born December 7, 1929, in Cleveland, OH, the son of the late Henry Clarence Burkhart and Olive Eulalie Watson Schillig. He was raised in Crestline, Ohio, graduating from Crestline High School with the Class of 1948. Mr. Burkhart maintained friendships with the members of this class through the years. He and his wife were privileged to attend many of the reunions, and he was President of the Class for their 50th Reunion in 1998. As a youth he worked in the Roundhouse of the Pennsylvania Rail Road in Crestline with his father. Mr. Burkhart's specialty was painting the Keystone and the Rail Road's name on the engines. Mr. Burkhart joined the United States Marine Corps on July 9, 1948 and was Honorable Discharged on January 18, 1950, as a World War II Veteran, with the rank of Private First Class. He was stationed at Quantico, VA. His length of service, like many others, was shortened because of a change at this time by President Harry S. Truman that the personnel of the Marine Corps could only be 5% of the Navy, rather than the traditional 10%. Mr. Burkhart exemplified the motto of "Once a Marine Always a Marine" throughout his life. Following discharge he moved to the Washington, D.C. area. Mr. Burkhart was employed by the Federal Government from October 18, 1950 to January 3, 1985, working at the Federal Housing Administration, Central Intelligence Agency, National Institutes of Health, and Federal Aviation Administration. Through these years he experienced the pre-computer years of electronic accounting machines and the development of computers up to the "PC age", retiring as a Computer Specialist in the Administrative Office of the Federal Aviation Administration. In his retirement, he continued using his gift at home with his specialty of designing cards for many occasions for family and friends. He also enjoyed oil painting and, with his wife, gardening, remodeling and travel throughout this great country and Canada. Mr. Burkhart was a Life Member of the Diamond State Detachment, Marine Corps League, where he shared his respect of the high principles of the Corps with his fellow Marine veterans and families. Mr. Burkhart's deepest devotion was to God whom he served in quiet ways with many through his life and most especially with his family whom he embraced with great love. In addition to his parents, Mr. Burkhart was preceded in death by his "second" Mother, Catherine Schauff Burkhart; his sister, Elizabeth Ann Burkhart; his brother, Henry Clarence Burkhart, Jr.; his parents-in-heart, Daniel and Esther S. Goodwin; his aunts, Teresa B. Miner, Ruth Watson Dresser, Laura Watson Seaman; and uncles, Leo Burkhart, Edwin, Byron, Lloyd and Donald Watson. He is survived by his beloved wife of 29 years, 10 months, Diane Goodwin Burkhart of Milford; his son and wife, Charles W. and Leigh Burkhart of Titusville, FL; his daughters and their families, Mary Lynn and James Salem, Matthew Traver, and Jennifer and Beth Salem, all of Sunrise, FL and Ruth Ann and David R. Harrell, Sr., David, Jr., Amanda and Alexis of Longwood, FL; his brothers, Joseph and Sandra Burkhart of Crestline, OH, Thomas and Peggy Burkhart of Marysville, OH, William (Bill) and Barbara Burkhart of Galion, OH, James (Jim) and Rose Burkhart of Wooster, OH and Ernest (Ernie) and Linda Burkhart of Eldersburg, MD; his sisters, Mary Lou and Charles Marek, Gladys Burkhart Henderson and Irene (Renie) Batory of Crestline, OH, Catherine (Cathy) and Michael Forman of Galion, OH, Evelyn (Evy) Buchanan of Ashland, OH and Teresa Jane and Thomas Fisher of Lakeland, FL; many nephews, great nephews, nieces and great nieces.
