After graduation, he married Patricia Haumann of Providence, Rhode Island. He died at age 22 while flying out of Bainbridge Air Force Base in Georgia, when the engine of his T-6 failed on a practice night takeoff on January 11, 1955. At the time of his death he was one of the top student pilots at Bainbridge and a member of the three-man student staff.
