Obituary
Arthur Guericke, 87, of Mitchell, died Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Firesteel Health Care Center in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, May 29 at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Servicemen?s Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Monday at Zion Lutheran Church with a prayer service at 6:30 PM. Arrangements are under the direction of the Bittner Funeral Chapel.
Arthur Elmer Guericke was born on a farm near Clayton, SD to Arthur, Sr. and Alice (Werning) Guericke on August 4, 1930. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at St. Peter?s Lutheran Church, Clayton. Arthur was raised on a farm near Clayton and attended rural school in Hutchinson County. After entering into the US Army on March 30, 1953, Arthur served overseas in Germany, where he was often asked to serve as a German interpreter.
On February 17, 1957, Arthur was united in marriage to Arlene Stoebner and to this union three children were born. He raised his family and brought them up in a strong Christian faith on the farm south of Alexandria until he retired in 1992.
He was an active member of St. Peter?s Lutheran Church, Clayton, where he served as Elder and in other various church offices. After retiring, they joined Zion Lutheran Church, Mitchell. He served on the Cenex Board of Directors and was a member of the American Legion.
He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and playing bingo and a good competitive game of cards. He never turned down an opportunity to go hunting or fishing and loved spending time at the river in Chamberlain.
Arthur is survived by his wife, Arlene; children Daniel (Jane) Guericke, White Lake; Douglas (Janelle) Guericke, and David Guericke, Alexandria; grandchildren Mark Guericke (Melinda Krumvieda), White Lake; Laura (Garret) Bergeleen, Wessington Springs; Jill Guericke (Nick Rolfsmeier), Rapid City; Nicole (Michael) Lewis, Sioux City, IA; Ryan Guericke (Tessa Hertel) and Megan Guericke, Alexandria; great-grandchildren Shae and Karl Bergeleen, Wessington Springs; his siblings, Alice Holzworth, Freeman; Lena (Bud) Winter, Mitchell; Gilbert (Carol) Guericke, Las Vegas, NV; and Eldon Guericke, Sioux Falls; brother-in-law Roland Preszler, Yankton; Elton (Diane) Stoebner, Tripp; and sister-in-law Leona (Jim) Meyer, Parkston.
He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Justina Guericke; his mother and father-in-law, Emanuel and Alma Stoebner; his siblings, Wilhelm Guericke, Alma Preszler, brother-in-law John Holzworth, sister-in-law Adeline Nordseth.
Arthur fought the good fight; he finished the race; he kept the faith. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Main Street Living.
