Bio: Carl Emil August Kluver, son of Carl Emil and Emma (Hesse) Kluver, was born on the family farm near Mapleton, Iowa on December 27, 1924. He entered into eternal rest on May 26, 2017 at Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 92 years, 5 months, 29 days.Growing up on the farm in the Mapleton and Charter Oak area, Carl learned the value of hard work. During high school, he worked for his uncles feeding cattle in their feed lot. Before completing his senior year at Charter Oak High School, Carl enlisted in the United States Navy in October of 1943 during World War II. He proudly served on the U.S.S. Richmond - AGG B. He was honorably discharged at the end of the war in 1946.After returning home, Carl met the love of his life, Lois Mae Steinhoff. They were married on October 17, 1947 and enjoyed over 65 years of marriage. To this union three children were born, Charles, Ross and Joan.Working with Safeway, Carl began his career in Denison, Iowa before being transferred to the Shenandoah store where he worked as a meat cutter. He worked for Safeway for 25 years. Carl then bought the Standard tank wagon in Essex. He loved being his own boss and setting his own hours.After retirement, Carl spent more time on the things he enjoyed: golfing, refinishing antiques and caning chairs. He didn?t take up golf until he was 50 years old and ended up with five holes-in-one.Carl was a member of the St. John?s Lutheran Church in Essex, the Essex Volunteer Fire & Rescue, the Plainsmen men?s choir, a charter member of the Page County Landfill, and the Shenandoah American Legion Club and golf course. One of the highlights Carl enjoyed was taking a trip to visit Washington D. C. with the Veterans Honor Flight in 2009.Preceding Carl in death were his wife, Lois (Steinhoff/Miller) Kluver; two sons, Charles and Ross Kluver; parents, Carl and Emma Kluver; in-laws, Herman and Clara (Washburn) Steinhoff, Charles and Florence (Washburn) Miller; great granddaughter, Brooklyn Olson; brother, Gilbert Kluver and wife Janie Ruth; sister-in-laws Eva (Steinhoff) and Lewis Humphrey and Elda (Steinhoff) and Vic Byers; brother-in-law, Jack Steinhoff and wife Gloria; two nephews, Dallas Byers and Mark Steinhoff; and niece Sandra Rogers.Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Joan Olson of Essex; four grandsons, Joshua Kluver of Tucson, AZ, John Olson and wife Erin of Shenandoah, Grant Olson and wife Christina of Des Moines, IA, and Christopher Olson and wife Holly of Shenandoah; granddaughter, Katelyn Olson of Kansas City, MO; three great grandchildren, Morgan Kluver, Morgan Olson and Landon Olson; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.Celebration of life funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Nishna Valley Funeral & Cremation Service in Shenandoah. The family will greet relatives and friends with visitation and viewing from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, Friday, June 2, at the funeral home. Military rites will be accorded by the Shenandoah American Legion Post #88 Honor Guard. A memorial is being established. Cremation will take place following the service on Saturday. Inurnment will be in the Little Sioux Twp. Cemetery at Smithland, Iowa at a later date.
